Hard Drives For Digital Video Production

Hard Drive for Video ProductionWhen selecting an external hard drive for digital video production a bargain basement drive is usually not the best choice. Less expensive drives typically have speeds up to 5200 rpm and USB interface. The old adage that you get what you pay for has never been truer. If you are a video professional or dedicated consumer you know you can never have enough drive speed and digital video transfer rates can never be fast enough. A drive with speed of 7200 rpm is recommended when encoding and editing digital video.

Interface Options: Several interface options are available on external hard drives including USB 2.0, USB 3.0, FireWire 400/800, eSATA and Thunderbolt. To provide maximum flexability some drives have more than one interface port.

When selecting a drive for digital video applications use one with the fastest interface available on your computer and at least 7200 rpm because digital video files are very large and projects will take longer with slow drive speed and interface. Following these guidelines will help your video project go smoother and faster.
